    A stylist’s guide to: rugs

With the popularity of hardwood flooring looking like it won’t end anytime soon, rugs are the perfect way to still add a bit of cosiness to your home.

But to say the choice in rugs is vast is an understatement. There are so many styles to pick from – the boldest geometrics to the most intricate Persians. The key is to know how to style your rug for the purpose of your home. Here are some great tips to get you started!

    Quality control

Rugs are one area you definitely don’t want to cut back on the budget, as footfall will cause damage to a poorly made rug very early on. Scout out rugs made of natural fibres and pigments, with a high knots per square inch (KPSI) count. Also, don’t forget to put a non-slip rug pad underneath to prevent falls.

    In season

Rugs do help insulate a room, so it’s important to choose the right rug for different seasons of the year. A premium wool rug will help keep you nice and toasty during winter, but in the summer you’ll want something more lightweight like jute. Make the switch easy with classic styles and a predominately neutral colour scheme.

    Bigger the better

You’ll need a measuring tape to find out the exact right size for your room, but don’t shy away from designs that seem almost too big. A rug that’s too small contributes to a “floating rug” look, where the rug doesn’t touch any of the furniture and looks piddly in the middle of the room.

    Be colour wise

If you know your kids and puppy dog will be trampling all over this rug, then snow-white is not the way to go (unless hoovering all day is your idea of a good time). Darker colours don’t show up dirt or footprints as much, and have the added benefit of helping your furniture stand out.

    Shape up

The first-time styler can err towards rectangular rugs, but don’t feel constrained to this. Circular rugs can also look great in the living or dining room, adding a sense of radial symmetry to the space. And, if you’re feeling creative, abstract organic-shaped rugs are in!
