Small space living: Our Interior Designers’ top tips for apartments

Living in a small apartment can be challenging, especially when it comes to optimising your living space. But with some apartment styling strategies, you can create a space that’s functional, stylish, and comfortable. Here, we share the top tips from BOWERBIRD’s interior designers on how to make the most of your small apartment.

    Maximise vertical space

In a small apartment, every inch counts. That’s why it’s essential to use your vertical space wisely. Using tall bookshelves or installing floor-to-ceiling curtains can make your space feel bigger by drawing the eye up and creating the illusion of more space.

    Choose multi-purpose furniture

Multi-purpose furniture is key to small-space living. We recommend using a storage ottoman as a coffee table or a sofa bed as a guest bed. By choosing furniture pieces that can serve multiple functions, you’ll save space and create more versatile living spaces.

    Use mirrors

Mirrors reflect light and create the illusion of more space if placed strategically: A  large mirror across from a window to reflect natural light, using a mirrored backsplash in your kitchen or in a narrow corridor can create depth.

    Keep it simple

In a small space, less is more. Using simple furniture with a clean design and minimal decoration will keep your apartment feeling open and airy. Avoid clutter and choose pieces that are visually lightweight, like a minimalist dining table with sleek legs or light-coloured coffee tables.

    Add greenery

Plants and greenery are an easy way to bring life into your small apartment. Our designers recommend using small potted plants to create a natural focal point and a more relaxing atmosphere.

    Use colour strategically

Colour plays a significant role in making a small apartment feel larger. Light, neutral colours on your walls and floors create a cohesive, airy feel. Use textures or pops of colour on cushions,  throws, or artwork to add visual interest without overwhelming the space.
