How to change your home styling with the seasons

We have different wardrobes for the seasons, so it only makes sense to have different home styling for the seasons, too.

Within reason – otherwise that could get very expensive! Here are some easy and effective ways to adapt your home, making sure your interiors “wow” for all seasons of the year.

Surprisingly, there are things you can do to cool down your home during the hottest season of the year – and they don’t involve expensive AC bills.

    • Focus on fabrics. Polyester is a heat magnet, so swap it out for lightweight cotton sheets, bedspreads and pillowcases. You will instantly feel the difference.
    • Use plenty of white furniture and decor. White reflects heat – and thankfully, it never goes out of style.
    • If you’re not at home during the day, use blackout curtains. You’ll come back to a much cooler house.

As the days get shorter and the air gets cooler, there are lots of ways to reflect the transformative autumn season in your furniture.

    • Play with warmth – after all, this is the season of falling leaves and pumpkin-spiced cosiness. Bring the outside in with autumnal colours such as burgundy, burnt orange and mustard yellow.
    • Start to layer up the soft furnishings, including throw cushions and blankets. You’ll only continue to do this in winter (coming up next!). Tip: mix and match textures, from chunky knits to fine weaves, to add plenty of visual interest.
    • Dried flowers may seem like a cliched way to celebrate autumn, but why fix what isn’t broke? We love arranging pampas grass and pussywillow into vases, and the best part is it lasts all year round.

We typically spend more time inside during winter, so it’s even more important to get our interiors as welcoming as possible…

    • Swap out light fabrics for heavy duty ones. Wool is by far the warmest, and will last you a lifetime with the proper care.
    • Hardwood floors are amazing in summer, but can get very chilly during a cold snap. Lay down a plush floor rug to insulate your home and keep your feet warm.
    • When in doubt, go for mood lighting. Candles may not actually make your home many degrees warmer, but as with many styling tricks, it’s the illusion that makes a difference.

After a long winter, it’s time to bring some brightness and colour back!

    • Add hues! You don’t have to go crazy, but a stained glass vase, rich velvet cushion or graphic art print will absolutely evoke the joy and playfulness of spring.
    • Invest in some new plant babies to take care of, now that the sun is out again. Houseplants not only look great, but also help keep us healthy by oxygenating the air.
    • Use fruit as decor. Flowers may be the obvious choice for spring, but a big bowl of local produce is the perfect celebration of the season – and you can eat it, too.
