    Designer-approved tips for maximising space

Good things generally come in small packages…

However, the size of your rooms may be the exception! With more people than ever spending their time indoors, it’s no surprise that so many of us are also seeking wide-open living arrangements. But what do you do when space is sparse? We suggest faking it till you make it. To start, try these four expert-approved tips, designed to maximise space and give the illusion of more room in your home.

    Ask the experts

Maximising space is easier said than done. A good interior stylist, like the members of our own Stlyed to Keep team will be experienced in spatial planning. This means that they can help you map out a space-maximising strategy before you even consider decor.

Mirror, mirror on the wall …

Mirrors create the illusion of height as they reflect the space and amplify ambient light. While a beautiful statement mirror is a great place to start, why stick to your bedroom walls? Incorporating reflective surfaces, such as luminous bench tops in your kitchen, bathroom and dining spaces, is an easy way to maximise space.

    Let there be light

One of the easiest ways to fake the illusion of space is with lots of light. Start with natural sunlight streaming through the windows, or opt for the right light bulbs, to recreate a little of mother nature’s magic. Your home will look brighter, warmer and infinitely more spacious.

    Sparking joy

Whether you are inspired by Marie Kondo, the philosophy of Feng Shui, or just really want to create the illusion of openness, decluttering is a simple hack to help you maximise space. Keep only what you’ve used in the last six to 12 months; create a designated spot for items you want to keep (just make sure to always put things back in their “spot”!) and get creative with space-maximising storage solutions such as optimising the backs of doors; place hooks inside cabinets and choosing furnishings that do double duty – such as this ottoman which also serves as a trunk
