BOWERBIRD Space Crush: The Surfrider Malibu

This month’s BOWERBIRD Space Crush is inspired by BB stylist Madeleine’s upcoming trip to California. Cue California Dreamin’! When searching for the perfect accommodation, Madeleine came across this beauty of a hotel… and was then devastated to find that it was in fact completely booked out for the Easter break! After having a look for ourselves, we can totally see why Madeleine is heartbroken (no exaggeration). The Surfrider Malibu is, as the name suggests, in Malibu and sits across the street from the world-famous Surfrider beach. The hotel interior is inspired by the Malibu landscape and rich heritage of the local area’s surf culture. The hotel started as a 1950’s motel and has been completely transformed by Architect Matthew Goodwin, into a modern boutique hotel with an interior that gives designers like us the tingles! The rooms are simplistic but feature a neutral palette that has a certain depth about...

5 things buyers are looking for in their dream home

If you want to sell your house – and make returns on your investment – you need to get into the mindset of a home buyer. What do home buyers want? While their needs vary (nice neighbourhood, home office, a backyard for future kids to run around in), most home buyers are looking for the same things in their dream home. Here are just a few you should consider before you put your property on the market.   Natural light Let’s face it – nobody wants to live in a dim, dark house. To maximise natural light, make sure you leave all windows and blinds or curtains open (assuming it’s not storming outside, of course). If your house doesn’t get a lot of natural light, create an illusion by sticking to a bright, clean colour palette.   Storage space Nobody ever complains about too much storage space. Make sure you...

Sight, smell, touch, sound, taste: using the 5 senses to sell a home

When it comes to viewings, home buyers are astutely perceptive. After all, it’s only a home they’re buying! So you can bet their senses will be tuned in to what they like, don’t like and even things you might not have noticed yourself (hey, has that scratch always been there?). Untidy chic: how a little “mess” can help sell a home

So the big day is finally coming. Hoovers at the ready! You’re opening your house to potential buyers so everything has to be spick-and-span and pure and perfect and Marie Kondo’d, right? Hear us out but: a house can actually be too tidy for a viewing. We’re not saying that you should leave dust on the mantle or the kids’ toys out in the yard. On the other hand, a house that’s too clinical can be difficult to connect with. In the property styling world, a little “organised disorganisation” creates that warm, inviting feeling that everyone wants when they first step into their new home. Here’s a mini-rundown of how we achieve the look at BOWERBIRD.

BOWERBIRD Space Crush: The Calile Hotel

Our stylist, Alison, recently visited The Calile Hotel in Brisbane, and returned inspired and renewed! She can confirm that this beautiful boutique hotel is just as incredible in real life as it is in the pictures. We would be lying if we said we weren’t a little (read: a lot) jealous of her little Summer weekend stay, especially with the Sydney weather being as miserable as it is right now. So, beware this blog post will cause major Summer withdrawals. The Calile Hotel was eloquently designed by Richards and Spence, an architecture firm that aimed to enhance and challenge the experience of our built environment. With a company motto like that, you just know anything they create is going to be something special. The design is a myriad of contrasts – think marble paired with soft velvets, a concrete facade against soft pastel coloured interiors, gold details complimented by raw...
