Your home is the place where you feel relaxed and comfortable, but its not just about being around your belongings that make you feel happy. The interior design of your home can also boost your health and wellbeing. Here’s how to create a space that will put a smile on you dial everyday.
1. Purify with plants
This year more than ever we are concerned about indoor pollution, which can be caused from things like cleaning products, air fresheners and VOC’s (chemical gases emitted from furniture). You can buy expensive air purifiers but plants are just as effective at removing indoor toxins. Not sure which ones to buy? For a start go for a Peace Lily, as they work on all common household chemicals and don’t need much upkeep. Another easy one to look after is English Ivy, which has been found to lessen the harmful effects of mould on the respiratory system. Red-Edged Dracena is one of the easiest plants to keep alive, hence why they sell them in bulk at IKEA. These are great at removing acetone (think nail varnish remover) from the air. Try and aim for at least one plant per room to bring a sense of calm to the space.
2. It’s all about colour
Its no secret that colour has an effect on our mood. You only have to notice how you feel walking into a bright colourful room then into a dark dingy one. Not sure what shades to go for? Yellow brings vitality and creativity and Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Ultra Violet promotes empowerment so these are great hues to have in your home office. Bedrooms and bathrooms benefit from having green around as it drives regeneration and renewal making it the perfect shade for these restorative spaces. Bold bright colours like turquoise, fuchsia and tangerine energise so are good pops of colour to have in the living room. Finally you may not think it, but brown is a well-known relaxant. As with green it invokes nature and organic materials with its earthy hue and encourages you to slow down. Go for cushions, rugs, wall art and decorative accents in these happy shades and it will make a big impact on your home.
3. Comfort is key
Your interiors should be more than just style and function; they have to be comfortable too. There’s nothing like snuggling up on a sofa full of comfy cushions and throws to make you feel relaxed and happy. Layering up your home with shaggy sheepskins and textured pieces will give your home a warming and inviting quality. Try adding a piece of rattan furniture or a solid wooden stool to the room and see how good it makes you feel. Cork and sea grass are delicate to touch and beautifully sustainable.
4. Enhance your lighting
Doctors have always encouraged us to get out in the sunlight and fresh air and there’s a good reason why. Sunlight increases our bodies’ production of endorphins and serotonin, the same chemicals that make us feel happy. So how can your interiors help with this? Well it’s a good idea to place your bed near a window and with curtains partially opening so you can enjoy the natural light. In fact its better to place any furniture in positions receptive to natural light as it means you will absorb a lot more natural light in your day which is an instant way to keep you energised. Of course its not always going to be possible for every room of your house to have natural light, but you can use dimming lights or lamps with warmer colours in its place.
